FOR SPORTS COACHES AND PHYSICAL TRAINERS

This toolkit covers a range of mental disorders and is aimed at helping us to be more mindful and sensitive to the needs of clients who may be living with mental health conditions and may seek support through exercise and physical activity.

MENTAL ILLNESS vs MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM

MENTAL ILLNESS

Is a disorder that affects and interferes with a person’s emotional, cognitive and social wellbeing. It is usually diagnosed by a medical professional, occurring in different degrees of severity and is usually a long standing condition.

MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM

On the other hand, occurs as a result of pressures from life’s stressors and equally affects an individual’s social, cognitive and emotional abilities. They occur over a shorter duration and may be less severe. If a mental health problem however, does persist and become more severe, it can be classified as a mental illness.
